Building a Fence
February 7, 2024
One of the most common questions I get from homebuyers (especially dog owners) is, how much does it cost to build a fence? Building a fence is a pretty straightforward DIY project, but it can get expensive! The price of lumber and other goods is constantly changing, but if you're looking to build a fence in the near future and just want a rough estimate of what it will cost you to do it yourself, I got you!!
This past weekend, my husband David and I built a 60ft fence in our backyard. The backyard of our first home is currently shared by our friend's tiny home. Soon, we will be renting our first home! In an effort to provide some privacy for our new tenant and tiny home friend, we wanted to build a fence to divide the backyard. It took us about 20 hours and $1,200 to build our 60ft fence. See below for a cost breakdown of each item we purchased for this project.
Auger Rental $91.00
Gravel $27.88
Stakes $8.98
Concrete $111.68
Pressure Treated Posts $110.68
Pressure Treated 2x4s $56.56
Post Level $11.44
Mason Line $6.20
Screws $25.98
Fence Brackets $21.76
Siding Nailer Rental $35.00
Nails $153.91
Fence Boards $493.12
The total cost for the fence $1,154.11 or $19.24 per foot. Now, use that price per foot number to estimate the cost of your new fence!
Hope this helps! Happy building ✨
